Odds and Ends!

Deborah Jeter

As school days approach, I find myself scrambling around for all those odds and ends. Where is that purchase order? What can I purchase? Where do I find it? Where is my substitute teacher's folder? I wonder what new and fresh songs I'm going to be able to find to start off school. Geez, I can't sing the same old songs I've sung for the past three years! Thus, these thoughts have driven me to producing a back to school, pick me up, survival kit!

Take a look at my list. (Look familiar?) Oh, you have one too. Great! Let's get busy.

  • Get those purchases in before the money is gone! Great places to shop and a few out of the way spots:

  • New Teacher/Substitute Teacher Survival Kit
Even though all of these lessons aren't specifically about music, it is definitely a good site for spurring ideas for songs to match the lessons. Hey! If you don't have anything, it's better than nothing. Right?

  • Roadkill Cafe for Kids
Another site with a wide assortment of info and activities. Not everything deals with music but it's still a very worthwhile bookmark. You'll find things such as:

    • Homework Resources, Tips for Parents, What Principals would tell parents.
    • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Animal Alphabet Rhymes, Dr. Seuss Page, Wizard of Oz Website.
      Plus, a whole lot more!
(this site claims over 3,500 links to the web) I decided to take their word for it.

A Good Idea for an Assembly: McGruff and Scruff and the Crime Dogs.

A Good Idea for a Reward Day: Internet Time - Children's Stories, Poems, Pictures and Sounds.

    Fun Music Ideas:
If you don't know about this newsletter for music teachers, you really owe it to yourself to take a look. If you want to join, it's free and it is delivered straight to you by email, once a month, from the guy who puts it all together, Thomas Robertson.

What's a school year in music without Songs for Scouts?:
This site has some cute lyrics, but the first song doesn't have a suggestion for the tune to be used for them. But thinking up a catchy melody shouldn't be too much trouble. It's worth looking at, anyway. There is also a page of Silly holiday songs.

Some more great ideas, Kay! In the month of January, my music classes begin singing songs from the Civil Rights movement and we keep singing those songs right through Black History Month. There is a F ...

Wow! You responded quickly! You're right - having a place to share ideas and resources makes a teaching area that is often pretty isolated, feel more.... friendly! :-)

I totally agree, Karen. When I know I'm going to gone from school, I have things outlined to a "T". And one of my 'stand by', 'no fail' options is to tell the sub to sing favorite songs out of the boo ...
