Lewis Francis Mack And Family

  Lewis Francis Mack, son of Lewis and Isabelle (Curry) Mack was born July 10, 1923 in Corning. He attended Corning Schools, graduating in 1941. During school years, he participated in a dance band with brother, Bob, and three other sets of brothers, known as the Owls. Frannie was active in football, basketball, and music, participating in CHS Band and National Award winning trumpet trio. In March, 1943, he entered the Army, serving as a Medic in New Guinea, Philippines, and Japan. Discharged in January, 1946, he became a partner in Curry & Mack Hardware with his father, Lewis and Uncle Leo Curry. In 1956 Frannie and Lewis bought Leo's share and moved to 702 Davis Avenue, to be known as Mack Tru Value Hardware.
  On July 31, 1943, Frannie married Phyllis J. Watts, daughter of Bruce and Helen (Russell) Watts, at Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, Colorado, where Frannie was stationed. Phyllis was born December 20, 1922 in Bloomfield, Iowa and attended school there prior to moving to Corning in 1935, graduating from CHS in 1941. Phyllis was active in music and drama during high school. She and Frannie enjoyed being in school plays and operettas. After attending Drake University in Des Moines, she worked there for one year. She then moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and was employed by Mutual of Omaha. During Frannie's overseas duty, Phyllis was employed by the Selective Service System in Corning.
  Three sons and one daughter were born to this family; Daniel, born December 7, 1946, Helenann, born February 24, 1949, and died shortly after birth, Bruce, born April 17,1951 and Andrew, born August 5, 1952. All three boys graduated from CHS in 1965, 1969 and 1970 respectively. Upon graduation from University of Northern Iowa in 1969, Dan taught and coached in Iowa Falls and Waterloo, prior to attending Physical Therapy School in Los Angeles, California, in 1973 and 1974. Dan married Linda Lentz of New Hampton, Iowa on July 31, 1970. They have three children, Brent, born February 22, 1974, Cori, born November 9, 1975 and Bryan, born January 7, 1979. Dan is Director of Physical Therapy at St. Anthony's Hospital, Carroll, Iowa. Bruce also attended UNI and the University of Iowa, where he graduated in 1974. He was employed in Cedar Rapids as a drug rehabilitation counselor, later moving to Portland, Oregon as Director of a similar program. Bruce married Terri Meadows of Hillsboro in June, 1980; the couple now reside in Hillsboro. Andy attended Iowa State University in Ames and U of I, graduating from ISU in 1976. He was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers, the Des Moines Botanical Center, and presently by the Des Moines Parks System. Dan, Bruce and Andy were all active in high school athletics and music and continue to maintain those interests.
  During their school years, they all took their turn at selling hardware and delivering appliances. The store was sold to Jack and Peg Gadberry in 1972. Frannie and Phyllis were in the business 26 years, the store in existence a total of 53 years. Frannie went to work a year later at National Farmers Organization and is presently employed as Assistant Director of Operations, Grain Department. Frannie has served as a Municipal Utilities Trustee and a City Councilman. He is a member of Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. Phyllis is a member of Legion Auxiliary, St. Patrick's Altar Society, and has been involved on committees for school activities and for Departmental Club. Submitted by Phyllis Mack
