James Allen
James Elwood Allen, 81, of Reynolds, died Friday, May 30,
2008, at the Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.
Services for Mr. Allen will be 10 a.m., Tuesday at St. Matthew
Lutheran Church, Milan. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at
Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial will be in
the Reynolds Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by
Reynolds American Legion Post No. 1166. Memorials may be made to the
church or to the Illinois Veterans Home, Quincy, Ill.
James was born on Jan. 13, 1927, in rural Mercer County, the son
of Will Lewis and Maude Swartout Allen. He married Violet George in
1948. She preceded him in death in 1980. Jim later married Thelma Louise
Livingston-Cross on Nov. 26, 1983, in East Moline.
Jim worked as a mechanic at International Harvester Works, East
Moline, retiring after 34 year of service. Mr. Allen and his brothers,
Raymond and Harry, owned and operated Allen Brothers Trucking in
Reynolds and Preemption.
Mr. Allen's memberships included St. Matthew Lutheran Church, UAW
Union Local No. 1304, East Moline, Reynolds American Legion Post No.
1166, where he was a past commander and was currently serving as the
senior vice commander. James was a World War II Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Louise Allen; children and
their spouses, William B. "Bill" Allen and his fiancee, Donna
Jean Williams, Rock Island, Patricia Lynn and Clark Downey, Illinois
City, Sherry Dawn and Mark Orey, Silvis, Carl D. and Lois Cross,
Channahon, Ill.; grandchildren, Bill and his wife, Beth, Mindie and her
husband, Billy, Heather and her husband, Rob, Ashley, Deana and her
husband, Kevin, Meghann and her husband, David, Adrienne, Jared, Nathan,
Nolan, Natalie, J.J and her husband, Andy, Kevin, Laura, Jeremy and his
wife, Amber; and 13 great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by
his parents; a daughter, Janalee Allen Hook; grandchildren, Stacey Lynn
Allen and David Lee Allen; and brothers, Raymond Allen and Harry Allen.
