George Barnes Death came suddenly
to George Barnes, a highly respected citizen and industrious farmer of
Preemption township, at 7 o'clock on the evening of March 10, 1937, at
the village. Mr. Barnes had been a business visitor in Sherrard in the
afternoon and on returning home did his chores and went to the home for
supper when he was stricken with a severe heart attack which resulted in
his death in a few minutes.
George Barnes was born on May 20, 1877, at the old Barnes
homestead, the son of James and Margaret Barnes. After the death of his
parents he and his sister, Miss Ella, have made their home in the old
home until five years ago when the farm house burned to the
ground. George and his sister moved into the Ed Mack house near their
home where they had continued to reside until his passing. He is
survived by four brothers, Tom of Preemption, Joe and John of Aledo and
Will of Reynolds; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ryan of Aledo, and Miss Ella at
home. Two brothers, James and Mike, had preceded him in death. He was an
active member of St. Joseph's Catholic church.
Services in charge of his pastor, Rev. J. T. Shields, were held
from St. Joseph's church at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with burial in St.
Joseph's cemetery. Pallbearers were five nephews, Louis, Joseph, Francis
and Earl Barnes and Arthur Ryan, and a cousin, Tom Mallory. Relatives
from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Rose Mallory, Miss
Margaret Mallory, and Tom Mallory of Champaign, Ill.
