Louis Barnes Is Dead At 41 Official Crib
Sealer for Corn Loans in County Succumbs in Tri-City Hospital
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning, November 3, at 10
o'clock in St. Catherine's church, Aledo, for Louis J. Barnes, 41 years
old, who died in St. Anthony's hospital, Rock Island, Monday night,
October 31, 1938, after several weeks illness of complications.
Mr. Barnes, who resided with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Barnes, on a farm six miles southeast of Reynolds, had been official
crib sealer for federal corn loans in Mercer county since 1934. He was
formerly receiver for the Matherville State bank, serving until the
receivership was closed.
Mr. Barnes was a member of a prominent Mercer county family and
was born June 15, 1897, on the farm where he had since resided. He
attended the Matherville schools and was graduated from St. Ambrose
academy in Davenport. He was active in the Farm Bureau and was a member
of St. Joseph's church, Preemption.
Besides the parents, survivors include a brother, Raymond Barnes of Reynolds.
Rev. John T. Shields, pastor of St. Catherine's church, will
officiate at the funeral services and burial will be in St. Joseph's
cemetery at Preemption.

Services Held for Widely-Known Preemption Township Farmer.
Aledo, Ill., Nov. 4--(Argus News Service.)--Hundreds of friends and
relatives of Louis Barnes of Preemption attended funeral services for
him yesterday at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine's church, Aledo.
Solemn requiem mass was celebrated by the Rev. John T. Shields,
pastor. The Rev. John Rohret, dean of St. Ambrose college, was deacon,
and the Rev. E. J. Butler of St. Ambrose, who has been serving as
assistant pastor of the parish, was sub-deacon. Joseph Mack of
Preemption served as thurifer , and acolytes were Dan Mack and Billy
Lyons of Preemption.
In the sanctuary were the Revs. Enos H. Barnes of Moline, James
Callahan of St. Augustine, D. F. Monaghan of Milan, Francis Casey of
Streator, and L. J. Dougherty of Princeton, and the Rev. Father Cleary
of East Moline.
Pallbearers were B. W. Horan, George Nesbitt and John Hanrahan of
Preemption, and Earl D. Peterson, Arthur Ryan and E. J. Longley of
Aledo. Interment was in St. Joseph's cemetery in Preemption.
The crowd filled the church and many were unable to be seated.
Mr. Barnes' wide acquaintance throughout the county and the prominence
of his family brought friends to the rites from long distances.
Music was by St. Joseph's choir of Preemption, with Mrs. Charles
J. Conway as organist. (1938) |
