Barnes Funeral services for Thomas
Barnes, age 74, were conducted by Father John T. Shields of Aledo at
10:00 a.m. on Monday in St. Anthony's Catholic church at Mathersville.
Other clergymen present and assisting in the services were Father Enos
Barnes of Moline, Father J. Butler of St. Ambrose college, Father
Francis Casey of Geneseo, Father D. F. Monaghan of Milan, Father Edward
Lew, Father Louis Rochert and Father William Cleary.
Burial was made in St. Joseph's cemetery, Preemption, and the
pallbearers were M. H. Mack, Bert Horan, Bernard Brennan, Jacob
Crawford, Richard Ash and R. W. Rathbun.
Among those attending the funeral from a distance were Dr. and
Mrs. Edmund Norton and Dr. Leo Norton of Chicago, Thomas, James and John
Cain of Champaign, Miss Cox, August Eipper and daughter, Mrs.
Francile Carlin, and Phil Degen and wife of Davenport, Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Harper and Mr. Berger and family of East Moline, Patrick Culigan
of Moline and Edward Horan of Rock Island.
Among those surviving are the widow; a son, Raymond J., of
Reynolds; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ryan of Viola and Miss Ella Barnes of
Aledo; three brothers, John and Joseph of Aledo and William of Reynolds;
and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his son Louis and four
brothers, James, Michael, George and an infant.
The son of James and Margaret Barnes, Thomas was born on Feb. 26,
1865 in Perryton. After an illness of four months death came to him at
his home in Preemption at 1:00 p.m. on January 18.
On Oct. 14, 1891, he was married to Miss Hannah Norton in St.
Joseph's church, Rock Island. They began housekeeping on the farm where
he has since lived. He belonged to St. Joseph's church, Preemption,
served as town assessor for 17 years and was on the board of school
directors for 27 years.
Mr. Barnes was a man of honor and high ideals. A kind husband and
a good neighbor, he had the respect and esteem of all who knew him.
