Earl Woodrow Battles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Battles, was born near Valeria, in Polk county, Ia., April 11, 1912, and passed away in the Mary Greeley hospital at Ames, Ia., Sunday evening, November 13, 1938, aged 26 years, 7 months and 2 days.
In 1929 Earl moved with his parents to the Collins community and continued to live near or in Collins until the time of his death.
On May 29, 1933, he was united in marriage to Miss Orpha Renfeldt. To this union were born three children: Arthur, Joan and Marilyn. Earl was a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, a willing worker and a loyal friend. His quiet, unassuming ways and his friendly smile will be greatly missed.
Besides his parents, wife, children, and many other relatives and friends, he leaves three bothers: Le Roy, Raymond and Asa; one sister, Mrs. Betty Johnstone, and three half-brothers: Peter, Paul and Dick. His twin brother died in infancy. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to those who loved Earl, mostly because they knew him best.

  No tears are there!
Though here we miss the loved ones dear
And lonely are and often fear,
In heaven, our home, we'll meet them all
And answer once again their call,
  No tears are there!
(November 1938)
