Funeral Services Held Today For Bessie Benton, 76
Mrs. Bessie Benton, 76 of 932 Park Street, died late Friday
afternoon at a local hospital.
Funeral services were held this afternoon (Monday) from the Smith
Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester Custer, pastor of the Grinnell
Methodist church, officiating. Organ music was provided by Mrs. Willard Heffner.
Pallbearers were Jerry Carter, Al Renaud, Wallace Fiser, David
Gooch, Dennis Gooch and Walter Schmidt. Burial was in the Hazelwood cemetery.
Mrs. Benton was the widow of Guy Benton, who died in January of 1951.
The daughter of Franklin and Julie Butrum Davenport, she was born
in Grinnell on January 19, 1889. She attended the local schools and
Grinnell high school.
On June 2nd, 1909, she was united in marriage with Guy B. Benton.
To this union were born six children: Mrs. Donald (Maxine) Farmer of
Marion, Ohio; Harold Benton of Rockford, Ill.; Mrs. Russell (Jeanette)
Wiley of Montezuma; Robert Benton of Newton; Emery Benton of Guthrie
Center; and Mrs. William (Ruth) Phipps of Grinnell.
Mr. and Mrs. Benton farmed north of Brooklyn and near Malcom
until 1937 when they moved to Grinnell.
She was baptized and attended the Grinnell Methodist church.
Surviving besides her six children are 16 grandchildren; four
great grandsons; and two sisters, Mrs. Loyal Gooch of Newton and Mrs.
Mary Kocalas of Peoria, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one
grandson, three brothers and two sisters.
