John Brennan

John Brennan was born January 20, 1857 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of the late Patrick and Sarah Brennan and passed away September 2, 1924 in the Alexian Bros. hospital, Chicago.
When but a small child he came with his parents to Mercer County, settling on the then open prairie of Preemption township.
On November 15, 1882, he was united in marriage to Helen Daxon of Milan and immediately the new home was begun on the farm in Perryton, where they happily lived for forty years.
Seven children were born to this union, Sarah and Grace, who died in infancy, three sons, Dr. John W. of Chicago, Bernard and Edward at home, and two daughters, Myra and Eva at home.
On February 21, 1923, occurred the death of his wife after a lingering illness and almost at once his own health began to fail until on August 18, 1924, it was necessary for him to enter a hospital for treatment and operation.
Although every effort was used by his son, Dr. John W., in consultation with Chicago's best doctors, to build up the worn tissues, his constitution refused to respond and he passed peacefully away.
Mr. Brennan was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic church and also held membership in the Modern Woodmen of America.
He served Perryton township as commissioner of highways for nine years and held the respect of a host of friends and neighbors in the community where he so long lived.
Besides his immediate family he is survived by one brother, Daniel of Preemption, one aunt, Mrs. Susan Conway of Aledo and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at St. Joseph's church by Rev. Father C. J. Higgins, with interment in St. Joseph's cemetery.
Six neighbors acted as pall bearers, Martin Conway, Cicero Boyles, James Horan, Charles Fenstermacher, Thomas Barnes and James Mack.
