LaVerne Burch
Funeral services for LaVerne Burch, 81, of Aledo, formerly of
Rock Island, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hodgson Funeral Home,
Rock Island. Burial was in Aledo Cemetery.
Mr. Burch died Wednesday, April 2, 1986, at the Mercer County Nursing
Home, Aledo.
He retired in 1968 after 40 years at the Rock Island, YMCA, where
he held positions as dormitory secretary, boys' work director and
general secretary. He also was director of Camp Hauberg and a member of
YMCA National Council for several years; and originated the Y Motor
Hikes, which took boys all over the United States. He was earlier
employed as a teacher at Taylor Ridge schools.
Mr. Burch married Dorothea Kane in 1927 in Rock Island.
In 1944, he helped organize Optimists University of citizenship;
was a member and past president of Rock Island Optimist Youth
Foundation; and assisted in organizing the Agenda and Rock Island
Quarterback Clubs. He was active in bond raising activity in World War
II and Community Chest. In 1978, he received the Augustana Outstanding
Service Award. He was a member and elder of South Park Presbyterian
Church, Rock Island.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jeanne Jensen, Rock
Island; a son, Roger, Viola, IL; a grandson; and a sister, Mario
Stevenson of California.
