James Edward Callahan
James Edward Callahan, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick
Callahan, died at his farm home northeast of Keithsburg, Saturday
morning at 6 o'clock, July 10, 1909, aged 24 years, 9 months and 10
days. Funeral services were held at the St. Mary's Catholic church, July
12, 1909, at 10 o'clock a.m., Rev. Father Welch officiating. Interment
was made in the Catholic cemetery.
James was born in Humbolt, Allen county, Kansas, September 30,
1884. He resided there five years, then moved to Mercer county,
Illinois, where he made his home until February 18, 1909 when he was
united in marriage to Maude Ella Gayler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. D.
Gayler. The young couple then moved to a farm in Henderson county,
southeast of Keithsburg, where they resided until five weeks ago. He was
taken sick at his home Sunday, June 6th. Monday he went to consult a
physician. On his way home he stopped at his father's home and was not
able to go home. This was his first serious illness. He was very kind
and patient during his suffering. Everything was done that could be done
to save him, but God had called him. He was of a kind and loving
disposition, always had a cheerful word for everyone. His presence will
be sadly missed, for he had many friends. He leaves to mourn his death a
young wife, father and mother, two brothers and one sister, namely, John
Wm., Fred E. and Anna M, of this place, besides a host of relatives and
friends. His six cousins, John Leahigh, Ward Callahan, William Callahan,
Charlie Callahan, Roy Callahan and James Murphy acted as pall bearers.
The Modern Woodman had charge of the funeral.
A loving one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is still,
A place is vacant in our home,
That never can be filled.
The golden gates were open,
A gentle voice said come;
As the angels sweetly called him
To that yonder shining shore.
