Mrs. Mary J. Callahan
Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock Monday morning in St.
Mary's Catholic church for Mrs. Mary Jane Callahan, 90, of Keithsburg
who passed away in the St. Mary's hospital in Galesburg. Saturday
afternoon Rev. C. M. Meyers of St. Catherine's church officiated at the
requiem mass and services, assisted by the Rev. Emil Metzger at the organ.
Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery with six nephews, Walter Rush,
Clyde Kissler and Ed Valentine of Aledo, Bernard and Lester Callahan of
Keithsburg and Robert Callahan of Rock Island serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. Callahan's death followed more than a year of illness.
Mary Jane Leahigh, daughter of John and Ann Maloney Leahigh was
born in Mt. Vernon, Ind., Jan 16, 1849. She came to Mercer county with
her parents when a small child and spent most of her life in the Seaton
and Keithsburg communities.
She was married to Patrick Callahan Dec. 25, 1878 in St. Mary's
church. They spent seven years of their married life in Junction City, Kan.
Four children were born to them one of whom, John William,
survives. Fred, Anna May, James and their father preceded her in death.
Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Edward Valentine and Mrs. Anna Rush of Aledo.
Mrs. Callahan was a devout member of St. Mary's church and Altar
society. She was a devoted mother and a good friend and neighbor and
will be missed by her relatives and friends.
