Phinneas Benjamin Conaway
Friends here were grieved to learn of the death of Ben Conaway
a former resident of Corning who passed away Friday, December 12, in
Denver, Colorado, where he had made his home of recent years. His death
was attributed to pneumonia, and he had been ill only a short time. It
is believed that his physical resistance had been weakened by an
operation, which he underwent a couple of years ago.
The body was brought to the Hilliard Funeral home Sunday on
number 6 and services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 with his
nephew, the Rev. F. C. Conaway of Paullina, in charge of the services.
Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
Phinneas Benjamin Conaway, son of Alexander and Morilla Conaway,
was born at Corning, Iowa September 23, 1880, and died Friday, December
12, 1941, aged 63 years, 3 months and 19 days. He grew to manhood in
this community after which he was employed at Lenox, Iowa. He went to
Omaha, Nebraska when still a young man, and was employed as a painter
and decorator for a number of years. At the time of his death he was
living in Denver, Colorado.
Mr. Conaway is survived by one brother, Ernest Conaway of
Chicago, Ill. and one sister, Mrs. Lulu Bryant of Detroit, also a number
of nephews and nieces. He was a man who made many close friends, who
sorrow with the relatives in their loss.
Ben Conaway, as he was familiarly known, was a fine workman, and
his workmanship was highly valued by his employers as long as he
continued in the decorating business. His quiet and friendly manner won
him a welcome place in the circle of his loved ones and friends.
Margaret Crosby and Mrs. William Craig of Denver, Colorado
accompanied the body to Corning from Denver. Others who attended the
funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Shewman of Massena, Ia.,
Roy Conaway of Melbourne, Iowa and Rev. F. E. Conaway of Paullina, Ia.
The two latter gentlemen are sons of the late Jay Conaway, brother of
the deceased who formerly resided in Corning.
