Mrs. Conaway Victim of Peculiar Accident

When word was received last Monday of the death of Mrs. Jay Conaway, the news was received with sorrow, but it was not until the body was brought to Corning Thursday that many friends here learned of the distressing details of the death of their one time friend and neighbor. Mrs. Conaway left Anamosa Wednesday in company with Mr. and Mrs. H. Yetsley, of Mt. Vernon, enroute on a trip to Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, where they expected to visit Mr. and Mrs. Frielie Conaway and become acquainted with the new grandson in the Frielie Conaway home. They spent Wednesday night in Chicago and just a mile this side of the Ohio state line the accident occurred which resulted in Mrs. Conaway's death. A car in front of the Yetsley car stopped to avoid killing a chicken, and the Yetsley car could not go around because of a car coming from the east, but were able stop clear of the car ahead. However, a large Buick car coming behind them was coming too fast to stop and crashed into the Yetsley car crumpling it between the two cars. Mrs. Conaway's death was caused by a wound in the back of her head, and externally she was not otherwise seriously injured. Mr. and Mrs. Yetsley were not seriously injured. Two members of the party in the rear car were injured, but not seriously, and all were taken to the hospital in Van Wert, Ohio. An operation was performed in the hope of saving Mrs. Conaway's life but she never regained consciousness from the time the cars struck, and her death followed on Monday after the accident on Thursday. Frielie reached his mother's bedside on Friday and Mr. Conaway and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Beck arrived in Van Wert at 3:00 a.m., on Saturday. Short services were held at the home in Anamosa on Wednesday and on Thursday the body was brought to Corning to the Hilliard Funeral Home and services were held at the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. L. W. Verts. Interment was made in Walnut Grove cemetery.
