Joseph Leo Conway
J. L. Conway of Preemption aged 57, died Friday night in St.
Anthony's hospital, Rock Island, where he had been during the last
month. He had been afflicted with cancer of the throat four years.
Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. Monday in St. Joseph's church in
Preemption, conducted by Father Welch of Aledo. Burial was made in the
Catholic cemetery at Preemption.
Mr. Conway was born in Preemption township Oct. 6, 1869. His
parents were early settlers of the county. He never married. Surviving
are two sisters, Sister Mary Vincent of Mercy hospital, Davenport, and
Mrs. Margaret Anthony of Shenandoah, Ia., and three brothers, Thomas and
Martin Conway of Preemption and Patrick Conway of Aledo.

While the end was known to be approaching, friends of Joseph
L. Conway were shocked by news of his death which occurred at 9:30 last
Friday evening, at St. Anthony's hospital in Rock Island. He had been
suffering for nearly four years with the malady that finally caused his
death and had sought relief from some of the best surgeons in the country.
Born in Preemption on October 6, 1859, he spent most of his life
there but in his later years had traveled extensively. He was never
married. Among those who mourn are two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Anthony of
Shenandoah, Iowa, and Sister Mary Vincent, of Mercy hospital, Davenport,
and three brothers, Patrick of Perryton and Thomas and Martin of Preemption.
Funeral services were conducted by Father Welch of Aledo on
Monday morning at St. Joseph's church, Preemption, where the deceased
held membership.
Joe Conway was a square and upright man. He was always a partisan
for what he believed to be right and did not seek to conceal his
preferences and opinions. Courteous, honest and fearless, he calmly bade
his friends "goodbye" and began the long journey with a clean
heart and unfaltering trust--Reynolds Press.
