Funeral services for Joseph Michael Conway, 81, 509 SW 2nd
Ave., Aledo, former Aledo city editor for the Argus, will be held at
9:30 a.m. Friday in St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, Aledo. The
Rt. Rev. Msgr. William H. Keeler of Harrisburg, Pa., chancellor of the
Harrisburg Diocese, and the Rev. C. M. Meyer, pastor of St. Catherine's,
will officiate, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, northeast of
Aledo. Visitation is after 7 p.m. Thursday at the Reiser Funeral Home,
Aledo, where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
Mr. Conway, who had been Aledo editor for the Argus for 37 years,
before retiring Dec. 31, 1965, died at 7:07 a.m. Tuesday, March 16 in
Mercer County Hospital, Aledo, of a heart ailment.
A son of Patrick and Julia Kennedy Conway, he was born Dec. 19, 1894, on
the family farm, northeast of Aledo. He attended the Black Oak school,
northeast of Aledo, and was graduated from St. Ambrose College, Davenport.
Mr. Conway first worked in the newspaper business in the early
30's after he was unable to continue farming after surgery. He worked as
a fieldman, selling job printing and doing some news writing. When the
Democrat merged with The Times Record in 1927, he returned to the farm
until starting his career with The Argus a few months later.
He was a member of St. Catherine's Church in Aledo and the Holy
Name Society.
Surviving are the widow; two brothers, Attorney William I.
Conway, Oak Park, and Vincent of Aledo; three sisters, Miss Philomena
Conway, Oak Park, Miss Virginia Conway, Aledo, and Mrs. Margaret Keeler
of Washington. D. C.
