Dr. Martin E. Conway
Dr. Martin E. Conway, 63, Aledo physician and surgeon and civic
leader, died shortly after 6 p.m. on Tuesday after suffering an apparent
heart attack in his home. He was taken to Mercer County hospital by
ambulance after he became ill.
Funeral rites will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine’s
Roman Catholic Church with the Right Rev. Msgr. William H. Keeler, of
Harrisburg, Pa., a nephew of Dr. Conway, officiating. Burial will be in
the Aledo Cemetery under the direction of the Reiser Funeral Home.
The body will be taken to the family home where visitation will be
held after l p.m. Thursday. The Rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m.
on Thursday evening.
Dr. Conway was born July 21, 1908 near Aledo, the son of Patrick J.
and Julia A. Kennedy Conway, and spent most of his lifetime in Aledo. He
was educated in Reynolds and Aledo high schools and graduated from Aledo
High School with the class of 1926. He took his undergraduate work at
Loras College, Dubuque, Ia., graduating Medical School, Chicago,
graduating in 1935.
His internship was served in St. Francis Hospital, Evanston, IL., and
engaged in the practice of industrial surgery with Libby, McNeill &
Libby Corp. in the Union Stockyards, Chicago, before being appointed to
the surgical stall at Hines Memorial Hospital in 1939.
While at Hines Hospital, he engaged in tumor research and left there
to take post-graduate work in surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
During his national medical associations.
Dr. Conway was awarded membership in honorary medical societies of the
Morehead Surgical Seminar and Lamhda Rho Roentgenological Seminar. He
was also a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. In September, 1941,
Dr. Conway returned to Aledo and formed a partnership for the practice
of medicine and surgery with Hugh D. Stites, M. D., with offices in both
Aledo and Viola, and the hospital in Aledo, operating under the name of
Stites-Conway Hospital.
Dr. Conway enlisted in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant
and was discharged from Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Dec. 26, 1942. Upon
discharge from the service he returned to Aledo and resumed the practice
of medicine and surgery.
At the time of his death, Dr. Conway was serving as chairman of the
Mercer County Tuberculosis Board, vice-president of the Mercer County
Medical Association, a member of the Mercer County Board of Health and
as medical advisor to the Mercer County Selective Service Board, a
position which he had held for more than 25 years.
In addition, he had served two terms as alderman on the Aledo City
Council. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Illinois
State Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Association,
Iowa-Illinois Central District Medical Association and Mercer County
Medical Association, as well as being on the staffs of the Mercer County
Hospital and Moline Lutheran Hospital. He was a member of the Pallerans
Post 121, American Legion, in Aledo.
Dr. Conway was married to Marie Hess on Feb. 3, 1940, in St.
Catherine's Catholic Church, Aledo.
Surviving in addition to the widow are two sons, Martin E. Conway, Jr.,
Aledo attorney, and Michael A. Conway of Chicago; a grandson, Scan
Conway; three brothers, Joseph M. Conway and Vincent Conway, both of
Aledo and William I. Conway, Oak Park, Ill., attorney; three sisters,
Miss K. Virginia Conway of Aledo, Mrs. Thomas L. Keeler, Washington, D.
C., and Miss M. Philomena Conway of Oak Park, Ill. He was preceded in
death by an infant son and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Robert Sponsler, Clyde Malone, H. O. Stutsman,
Boyd Henry, Lawrence Skinner, Leo Johnson, Kenneth Liggett, and Don
Lingafelter. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Mercer County
and Rock Island County Medical Associations, Attorney Dale G. Ives,
Attorney Stanton H. Prentiss, Robert Cosgrove, Russell Sandquist,
William Bigham, and staff members of the Mercer County Hospital. In lieu
of flowers, donations may be made to favorite charities or to the Mercer
