Lucian Cooper

Last Friday evening at 10:30 occurred the death of Lucian Cooper at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. Chadwick in south Prescott. Mr. Cooper had made this place his home for over forty years, having come here with his father and engaged in cattle buying. He had a wide acquaintance over southwestern Iowa, having traveled horseback for many miles on his cattle buying expeditions. He was of a very sociable disposition and made friends wherever he went. Until within the last five years he kept up buying and trading but a stroke of paralysis some time ago made it impossible for him to get around without much difficulty but until the very last he was interested in the cattle business and loved to talk about it. His familiar figure and pleasant greeting will be missed by Prescott people. Following is a sketch of his life: Lucian Cooper, oldest child of Henry and Sallie Cooper was born January 6th, 1844, in Lawrence county, Indiana and died at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. Chadwick in Prescott, Ia., June 29th, 1924, aged 80 years, 5 months, 14 days. When a little child his parents moved from Indiana to Illinois, and then on to Iowa, locating in Appanoose county, where they lived for some time, then coming to Corning. He and his father soon afterward came to Prescott, Ia., where he has resided the past forty-two years. He never married but lived with his father who died in 1895, the mother having passed away long years before. In early manhood Mr. Cooper united with the Baptist church. Two sisters, Laura and Mary Jane and one brother, James M., preceded him in death. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. A. Chadwick, with whom he has made his home lately and Mrs. Matilda Drach, also several nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p. m. at the Christian church in Prescott, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior and burial was in the family lot in the Corning cemetery.
