Mrs. Cubbage, Lifelong Joy Resident, Dies
Mrs. Mary Ellen Cubbage, 82, Joy resident for her entire
lifetime, died at 5 p. m. Saturday, June 13, 1953, at her home in Joy.
She fractured her hip in a fall last October, and had been bedfast ever since.
The Rosary was recited Monday evening at Davis Funeral home in
Aledo, and funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St.
Mary's Catholic church in Keithsburg. The Rev. John Hecht officiated at
the rites, and burial was in St. Mary's cemetery, Keithsburg.
Pallbearers were Fred Bloomer, Victor Braucht, George Noble,
Walter Cox, Morris Haas, and Glen Thomson.
Mrs. Cubbage, the former Mary Powers, was born July 31, 1870, a
daughter of Irish immigrant parents, John and Johanna Flynn Powers.
She attended schools at Joy, and on March 31, 1891, married John
N. Cubbage. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church at Keithsburg
and a charter member of the Laurel camp No. 1339 of the Royal Neighbors of America.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter,
Margaret, a son John, and several sisters and brothers.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Mosely of Aledo and
Mrs. Minnie Vanaltworst of East Moline; two sons, Charles and William of
Joy; a brother, James Powers of Aledo; eight grandchildren, 15 great
grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
