James Cullen
James Cullen, Cass County resident of the Reno vicinity,
passed away at Mercy Hospital at Council Bluffs July 13, 1948, at the
age of 82 years, 1 month and 19 days. He had been ill for several
months, following a stroke in February.
Mr. Cullen was born in Brimfield, Illinois, May 24, 1866, the son
of Nicholas and Margaret Cullen. He was the second of 12 children, two
of whom died in infancy in Illinois. The family move to Cass County when
Mr. Cullen was 6 years old, and he has resided there on a farm all his
life. He was united in marriage to Cathryn J. Barry at St. Patrick's
church in Massena, Iowa, by Rev. Fr. J. Enright, theirs being a double
wedding with Patrick Barry and Ella Hickok.
Two sons were born to this union, Bernard and Russell. Bernard
preceded his father in death February 22, 1937. He leaves to mourn his
passing, his wife, Cathryn, his son Russell, his wife and three
children, Edward, Anita and Kenneth, Mrs. Bernard Cullen and 6 children,
Cyril, Theresa, Rita, Barbara, Philip and Bernard and one great
grandchild, Kay Cullen, and five brothers, Peter, Mark, Mike, Morgan,
and Lawrence and one sister, Mrs. Mary Rongish of Gretna, Nebr. Two
brothers, Ambrose and William, and one sister, Emma Curry, preceded him in death.
Mr. Cullen was very friendly and kindly in manner taking great
delight in his grandchildren, and interested in all his friends. He was
highly respected in the community for his honesty, good judgment and Christianity.
Burial was in St. Timothy's Cemetery at Reno.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and
Mrs. Mike Cullen of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Cullen of Creston; Mrs.
Mary Rongish of Gretna, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Cullen of Orient;
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Cullen of Adair; a cousin, William Jay of Moorhead,
Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Barry of Creston; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Barry, and
a number of nieces and nephews.
Other out-of-town friends and relatives who attended the funeral
were: Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Hatton of Corning; Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Barry of
Creston; Mr. and Mrs. Marlon Ragan of Des Moines; Mrs. Edwin Mack and
Carolyn Ann, Mr. and Mrs. Royal Rusco and son Jimmie of Lenox; Mrs. John
McLaughlin and Joe, Mrs. Mary Sweeney and Cathryn Sweeney, Mr. and Mrs.
John Plowman and Mrs. Wm. Sweeney, Mike Connors, all of Creston; Mr.
Frank Wickham of Orient; Mrs. Stan Ronsheck and daughters of Omaha; Mr.
and Mrs. Art Devine of Des Moines; Mrs. Louis Schultz and daughter of
Council Bluffs; and Wm. Jay of Moorhead, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Waters
of Creston.
