John Patrick Donahue
Friends and relatives were shocked to hear of the sudden death
of John Donahue at his home in Des Moines which occurred last Thursday,
August 20, at 4:30, after a week's illness, caused from enlargement of
the heart. The body was brought to Corning Saturday night, and the
funeral was held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's church,
conducted by the pastor, Rev. Father Dollard. Interment was made in
Calvary cemetery.
John Patrick Donahue, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Donahue, was born
September 24, 1875, at Pacific Junction, Mills county, Iowa, where he
lived until 1881, when with his family he came to Adams county, settling
at Corning. Here he received his education at the public school,
graduating at the age of 16. During the time he had worked at the local
depot and learned telegraphy and the general duties of agents, when he
was appointed relief man, until 1887, when he was employed by the Adams
Express Co. at Des Moines as cashier. About three years ago he was
employed by the Q. as chief clerk in the freight office. He was married
to Miss Katherine Booth, of Des Moines, May 28, 1900. The children born
to this union are: Mildred, aged 7; Helen, 5; John, 3; Wayne, 11 months.
Besides his wife and three children, he leaves his parents, three
sisters and one brother.
The guests who attended the funeral from out of town were: Hugh
Donahue, Mrs. Mame Fillman and son Charles, Mr. and Mrs. M. Kennedy, all
of Omaha; Mrs. Mary Swassing and son Mike, Mrs. Maggie Melvihill, George
Hein, Council Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. E. Thackalberry, of Sioux Falls,
South Dakota; Ed Thackalberry of Des Moines; Mart Hein, Ray Taylor, Mrs.
F. J. Taylor, John Moran and Mr. Turner, of Creston; Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Taylor, of Farragut.
