Joseph L. Dowling

  The sudden and unexpected death of Joseph L. Dowling which occurred Wednesday night at 8:00 p. m., in Council Bluffs, was a shock to the family and friends of this fine young man who had spent his early years in this vicinity and who numbered his friends by the score in this county, where he grew to manhood. Mr. Dowling had been ill only a few days with a throat infection and his condition was not considered serious. He was sitting on the side of the bed when death came suddenly and it is believe it was due to a heart attack. The body was brought to Corning by Boyd Roland and funeral services were held from the St. Patrick's Catholic church at 9:00 a. m., Saturday morning conducted by Rev. Fr. M. J. Powers. Miss Winifred Sheridan of Omaha, Mrs. Dr. Ratter, from Ottumwa; Ed Sheridan and Miss Nellie Sheridan of Creston, and Miss Mary Donovan, of Des Moines were out of town friends who attended the funeral.
  Joseph L. Dowling, youngest son of Catherine and Thomas Dowling, was born August 10th, 1890, and died May 28, 1931, at the age of 40 years, nine months and eighteen days. He was born at Westside, Iowa, and came to Adams county in 1896, residing here until nine years ago when he went to Council Bluffs to take a position in the R. R. Mail Terminal, which position he held at the time of his death. He was a World War Veteran and a member of the American Legion. He was a graduate of C. C. C. C. Business College in Des Moines and also attended school in Valpariso, Ind. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Harry Scott, Mrs. Agnes Miller, Anna and Nellie Dowling, of Corning; and three brothers, John, of Corning; Will, of Montana; and Frank of Seattle.
