Death Takes Cyrus Dryden of Keithsburg.
Civil War Veteran and Ex-Sheriff of Mercer County dies From Hear Ailments
Fought in Sherman's Army
Cyrus E. Dryden of Keithsburg, a veteran of the Civil war and
an ex-sheriff of Mercer county, died Tuesday from heart ailments and was
buried today. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church
this afternoon and were conducted by Rev. J. F. McAnnally. The burial
was in the Keithsburg cemetery and the Masons, of which the deceased was
a member, conducted services at the grave.
Mr. Dryden was born in Highland county, O., September 21, 1846.
He enlisted in Co. F, 10th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, September 10, 1864,
and joined Sherman's army at Kingston, Ga. He fought in the Atlanta
campaign and marched to the sea and thence through the Carolinas to
Fayettesville, N. C., where the Confederate army opposing Sherman
surrendered. He was in the parade of Sherman's army in Washington and
was discharged May 20, 1865.
Mr. Dryden was sheriff of Mercer county for one term, 1894-1898.
For many years he was senior partner of the hardware firm of Dryden
& Dryden at Keithsburg, retiring several years ago.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lou Frazer Dryden, and two
brothers, Carlton Dryden of Burlington and William Dryden of Wichita, Kan.
