Blast Injuries Fatal to Joseph Ferneding

  Burns suffered in an explosion at the city sewage disposal plant about 8 a.m.. Tuesday resulted in the death of Joe Ferneding, 69, city employe, at 11:30 p.m. the same day at St. Anthony Hospital.
          4th Degree Burns
  Mr. Ferneding suffered fourth degree burns about the hands, arms and shoulders and second degree burns on other parts of the body.
  Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the St. Lawrence Church, of which Mr. Ferneding was a member. The Rev. Arthur S. Poeckes will offer requiem mass. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
          Rosary Tonight
  The body is resting at the Olerich Funeral Home, where the rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
  Mr. and Mrs. Ferneding moved to Carroll from Storm Lake four years ago. They resided in their home at 3228 North Court Street. Mr. Ferneding, son of Henry and Mary Ferneding, was born on a farm, near Templeton Dec. 31, 1883. He attended Sacred Heart School, Templeton.
  He was married to Margaret Becker May 31, 1911, at Gregory, S. D.
          Survivors
  Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Art (Loretta), Reinart, Carroll; three grandchildren; 
two brothers, John Ferneding, Templeton, and Frank, Manning,  and one sister, Anna Ferneding, Templeton.
  A son, Henry, died March 1, 1939.
  The explosion and fire which resulted in Mr. Ferneding's fatal burns occurred when he turned on the sewer pumps in the pump-house on the disposal plant grounds, City Engineer Leo Clark said. Sewage gas apparently had been trapped during the night in the building, which has a basement, the city engineer stated. The explosion occurred when the electric motor was turned on to pump sewage to the sewage digester.
  Mr. Ferneding had worked for the city about two years.

Ferneding Rites At St. Lawrence Church on Friday

  Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Friday at the St. Lawrence Church for Joe Ferneding, 69, city employe, whose death at St. .Anthony Hospital Tuesday night resulted from burns suffered in an explosion at the city sewage disposal plant Tuesday morning.
  Requiem mass was offered by the Rev. Arthur S. Poeckes. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Espenhover of Templeton and Ben Krapfl, friends of the Ferneding family, and Leo Clark, Melvin Pietig, Floyd Boell and Noah Baker, city employes.
  As a mark of respect to Mr. Ferneding, the city hall was closed during the rites.
  Many out-of-town relatives were present, including Mr. Ferneding's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ferneding of Manning, and his brother and sister, John and Anna Ferneding, Templeton;
  And the following relatives of Mrs. Ferneding: Mr. and Mrs. Martin Beckers and family and Gertrude King, Flint, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Beckers, Yankton, S. D.; Mary Beckers, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Beckers, Bill Beckers and Mrs. Katherine Beckers, Gregory, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Pete Beckers, Glendale, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Volmer, Rembrandt; Mrs. Joe Moore, Chicago; Mrs. Ed Keever, Madison, S. D.; Mrs. Maurice Boucher, Sioux City, and Mr. and Mrs. John Hastert, Alton.
  Mr. Ferneding leaves his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Art (Loretta) Reinart, Carroll, three grandchildren, and his two brothers and sister named.
