Manning
Michael W. Ferneding, 51, of Manning died Saturday, May 12,
2007 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at Zion
Lutheran Church in Manning with the Rev. Patrick Sparling officiating.
Casket bearers will be Clark Tibben, Kent Hugeback, Kevin
Hospelhorn, Gene Grade, Jay Drees, Joea Kemper, Scott Linde, LeRoy
Irlbeck and, in memoriam, Mike Culligan. Honorary casket bearers will be
Mr. Ferneding's nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in Manning Cemetery.
Visitation starts at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.
A son of Alvin and Rita (Dentlinger) Ferneding, he was born Sept.
2, 1955, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, grew up on a farm northwest
of Templeton, attended Sacred Heart School at Templeton and graduated
from Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll in 1973.
Mr. Ferneding completed a program in ag mechanics at Iowa Western
Community College in Council Bluffs before going to work for Puck
Implement at Manning.
He and Jean Adams were married July 24, 1982, at Bethlehem
Lutheran Church in Royal. They had two children and resided on a farm
near Templeton.
After 10 years with Puck Implement, Mr. Ferneding began farming
in the Templeton area, eventually doing custom work and seasonal work as
a truck driver for Garst Seed Co. at Mount Carmel.
In his younger years he enjoyed Figure 8 racing. He enjoyed John Deere
items and took part in many antique tractor pulls and drives. He was
leader of the Aspinwall Achievers 4-H club for 12 years.
He was diagnosed with a rare para-chordoma tumor in June 2004. He
underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, however the tumor
returned and by September 2006 he was paralyzed. He had numerous
hospitalizations before his death.
Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Manning; a daughter, Kelly
Ferneding, of Dallas, Texas; a son, John Ferneding, at home; his mother,
Rita Ferneding, of Templeton; seven siblings and their spouses: Lonnie
Ferneding and wife Betty of Manning, Gene Ferneding and wife Mary of
Carroll, Mary Kay Schroeder and husband Steve of Kinsley, Jim Ferneding
and wife Joyce of Manning, Jane McNaught of Omaha, Neb., Joni Warner and
husband Mike of Manning and Mark Ferneding of Templeton; a
brother-in-law, Ned Adams, and his wife, Donna, of Ankeny; and his
parents-in-law, Harry and Naomi Adams, of Milford.
Mr. Ferneding was preceded in death by his father, Alvin, and a
sister-in-law, Nancy Adams.
