Mr. Joseph Friedman Died Last Thursday

Was born in Massilen, O., and Moved to Carroll County in March of 1871.

  Halbur, Aug. 17. - Joseph Friedman passed away at his home early Thursday morning after being bedfast for about a week. Although he had not been well for the last two years and was unable to help himself without assistance, but up to the last few weeks he would take a daily walk assisted by his devoted daughter, Lena, who cared for him as only a loving daughter can. Deceased was born Sept. 26, 1844, in Massilen, O., and later moved with his parents to Luxenburg, Ia. He followed the occupation of farming. His marriage to Miss Mary Goetzinger took place at New Vienna June 27, 1870, and the following March they moved here. The land here was all prairie, their nearest neighbor being Joe Bucheit, three miles east, the farm now occupied by Theo. Buelt. The first forenoon while Mr. Friedman was plowing in the prairie he killed six large rattlesnakes. He often spoke of the beautiful deer that roamed here. He was the oldest living settler in Roselle township. Carroll was their nearest trading place and they attended services in a little frame building in Mr. Carmel. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Friedman. Two children preceded them in death, namely Anton, dying September, 1914, in Iona, Minn., and Elizabeth, (Mrs. Henry Haverman) April 7, 1916, near Roselle. The other children are Mathew, Peter and Joseph, all in business here; John, a farmer in Ogalalla, Neb.; William of St. Joseph, Mo.; Anna (Mrs. John Halbur) of Ionia, Minn.; Teresa, (Mrs. Henry Eischeid) of Elgin, Neb.; Katie, who is keeping house for Rev. Roth at Larchwood, and Lena at home. He is survived by two brothers, Peter of Roselle, and William of Templeton, and two sisters, Mrs. Mathew Reinart of here and Mrs. John Reinart of Currie, Minn. The latter was not able to attend the funeral because of ill health. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 9 a. m. in the St. Augustine church by Rev. Schilmoeller and interment was made in the family lot beside his wife who died April 7, 1922. The pallbearers were friends of the deceased, namely Theo. Potthoff, Sr., John Eischeid, Sr., Ben Berens, Joseph Eich, Henry Westendorf and Wm. Collison. The cross carrier was Orlando Eich. A large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral.
