Edward F. Gauthier
Edward Francis Gauthier, son of Augustus and Mary Gauthier,
was born on a farm in Taylor County, Iowa, February 23, 1879, and passed
away in the Veterans Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, January 15th, 1958,
aged 78 years, 10 months and 22 days.
Ed attended rural school, later attending Corning High School for
a time. At this time he left school and became an employee of the
Andrews Clothing Store, remaining in their employ for a number of years.
He was a member of Company K, and left for the Philippines at the
beginning of the Spanish-American war in 1898. While camped on the west
coast, he contracted typhoid fever, and was invalided home. He bore the
effects of this disease all through his life.
In 1913 he received the appointment as Corning postmaster, and
served in this capacity for thirteen years. When his appointment
expired, he accepted the agency for the Northwestern Life Insurance
Company, which he held until March 15, 1947, at the completion of
twenty-five years of service, having received numerous outstanding
awards during that period. A large part of his work in insurance was
with the partnership of Edward J. Larson, and after his retirement, the
Northwestern agency was taken over by John Jones, and the firm is now
Larson and Jones. Mr. Gauthier became an agent emeritus, and continued
to write insurance until a few weeks ago.
He was united in marriage to Claire McHale, November 5, 1904, in
St. Patrick's church in Corning, with Rev. Fr. Sheridan officiating.
They have made their home in Corning continuously, and active in many
affairs of the community. Ed was an ardent worker for the chautauqua,
lyceum etc. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus in 1915,
served as Grand Knight, and for many years was a district deputy, and
for some time carried the assignment as lecturer on subversive
activities for the state of Illinois, and was once a national delegate
to the convention, held in Atlantic City.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one dying
in infancy and Albert L. Gauthier who died in 1949, one sister, Mrs. Dan
Mack. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mrs. Claire Gauthier, one
sister, Miss Alice Gauthier, one sister-in-law, and many nieces and
nephews, who will share in the loss of his passing, remembering him as a
Christian gentleman, a loyal friend and fine neighbor.
Funeral services were held from St. Patrick's Catholic church in
Corning, Monday, January 20th, 1958, with Rev. Fr. Bonaventure singing
the Requiem High Mass, and Ourcq Post 117, of the American Legion
participating in graveside services.
Interment was in Calvary cemetery, with pallbearers Raymond
Gauthier, John Jones, Glen Stueckradt, Byron Mack, Paul Gauthier and
