Mrs. A. B. Gauthier Passed Away Sunday
Another pioneer mother and highly respected lady of the community was
called to her final reward this week when Mrs. Augustus B. Gauthier
passed away at her home in Corning Sunday morning at 7:15 o'clock. Mrs.
Gauthier had enjoyed her usual good health until only a few days before
her death, and was confined to her bed less than a week. Death was
caused by a complication of ailments incident to old age.
Mary Agnes Daly was born in Dubuque county, Iowa, May 10, 1854, and was
aged 77 years, 7 month and 10 days. Mrs. Gauthier was one of the few
remaining of the large number of citizens who move to Adams county from
Dubuque in the early days. Her early life was spent in Dubuque county
and on April 14, 1874, was married to A. B. Gauthier, also of Dubuque
county. The following year Mr. and Mrs. Gauthier moved to this section
of the state and first located on a farm in the north edge of Taylor
county. Later they move to a farm in Mercer township, where the family
resided until 1904. In the spring of that year Mr. and Mrs. Gauthier
moved to Corning and purchased a residence on Ninth street just east of
the public school building, which has since been the family home. Mr.
Gauthier passed away October 17, 1925. Five children were born to Mr.
and Mrs. Gauthier, one son dying in infancy. The living children all
reside at Corning and all were at the bedside of their mother during her
last illness and at the time of her death. They are. Mrs. Mayme Mack,
Edward F. Gauthier, Miss Alice Gauthier, who resided with her mother,
and Albert L. Gauthier. Mrs. Gauthier is also survived by several
grandsons and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock from St.
Patrick's church in Corning. The Solemn Requim Mass was celebrated by
Rev. M. J. Powers, pastor of St. Patrick's church. Rev. Father Gaul of
Afton, assisted as deacon and Rev. Father Tennisen, of Red Oak, as
sub-deacon at the mass. Rev. Father Puget of Lenox, sang the Mass. Three
grandsons of Mrs. Gauthier served as altar boys at the Mass. They were
Edwin Mack, Byron Mack and Paul Gauthier. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery.
Mrs. Gauthier was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America
lodge and the Spanish War Veterans' Auxiliary. By her kind manner and
fine christian character she won countless numbers of friends in the
community during her long residence here. She was devoted to her home,
her family and her church, a good neighbor who will be sadly missed from
the community.
