Death Takes H. G. Gehling
Herman G. Gehling, 93, former city councilman, died at 7:15
Sunday evening at his home, 642 West Second Street. Mr. Gehling, retired
farmer was well known throughout this area. Surviving are seven
children, 59 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and one brother. His
wife died in May, 1937. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at
SS. Peter and Paul's Church. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. F.H. Greteman will be
celebrant of solemn requiem mass. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Herman G. Gehling
Solemn requiem mass will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Msgr.
F. H. Greteman at funeral rites for Herman G. Gehling, 93, at SS. Peter
and Paul's Church at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Mr. Gehling died at 7:15 Sunday
evening at his home, 642 West Second Street, after being in failing
health five years and seriously ill the last month.
Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
The body is resting at the Sharp Funeral Home, where rosary
recitation will be at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Msgr. Greteman will
lead the prayers Tuesday evening.
Mr. Gehling, retired farmer, was a former city councilman. He was
stockholder in the Carroll County State Bank and former president of the
Farmers Grain & Lumber Company.
In his younger days he had taken an active part in community
affairs. He had served on the board of directors for fund raising for
St. Anthony Hospital and St. Angela Academy when both institutions were founded.
A native Iowan, Mr. Gehling was born Nov. 10, 1861, at Calmar. He
was married Jan. 24, 1888, to Ella Timp at St, Mary's Church in Fort Atkinson.
A year after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Gehling came to Carroll
and located on their farm one and one-half miles, south of the city.
They lived on the farm until 1924, when they retired and moved into Mr.
Gehling's present home here.
Mrs. Gehling died May 2, 1937. Mr. Gehling's son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Houlihan, and family have made their home
with him since 1939.
Mr. Gehling is survived by seven children; 69 grandchildren; 60
great-grandchildren and one brother, Henry Gehling, Thief River Falls, Minn.
His children are: Henry Gehling, Gilmore City; Theodore Gehling,
Carroll; Mrs. Anton (Agnes) Wernimont, Storm Lake; Sr. Mary Bernadita,
Cathedral Convent, Superior, Wis.; William Gehling, Carroll; Mrs.
Clarence (Catherine) Masching, Carroll; and Mrs. Houlihan (Cecelia), Carroll.
Three granddaughters are in the convent: Sr. Mary Anna Mae,
Lacrosse, Wis.; Sr. Mary Eucharia, Eau Claire, Wis., and Sr. Mary Ella,
Immaculate Conception Convent, LaCrosse.
Three children preceded Mr. Gehling in death: Mrs. William (Mary)
Reiling, Joseph and Herman Gehling. One brother, Barney Gehling, and
three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Mary) Hackfort, Mrs. Herman (Anna) Hackfort,
and Mrs. Henry (Margaret) Brincks, are deceased.
Mr. Gehling was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's Church and the
Holy Name Society of the parish.

Many relatives and friends attended funeral services at 9 a.
m. Wednesday at SS. Peter and Paul's Church for Herman G. Gehling, 93,
well-known retired farmer, who died Sunday evening at his home, 642 West
Second Street, where he lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. James Houlihan, and family.
Celebrant of solemn requiem mass was the Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. H.
Greteman. The Rev. Leo Lenz was deacon; the Rev. Thomas Donahoe,
sub-deacon, and the Rev. Richard Dirksen, master of ceremonies.
Mass servers were Edwin Masching, Lee Houlihan, Donald Masching
and Gerald Gehling, grandsons of Mr. Gehling.
Msgr. Greteman conducted graveside rites at the family lot in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons of Mr. Gehling: George
Gehling, Grand Meadow, Minn.; Albert Gehling, Gilmore City; Leo Reiling,
Coon Rapids; Marcellus Wernimont, Laurens; Frank Gehling and Raymond
Gehling, Carroll.
Surviving Mr. Gehling are seven children, all of whom were
present at the rites. From away were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gehling, Gilmore
City; Sr. M. Bernadita, Superior, Wis., and Mr. and Mrs. Tony Wernimont,
Storm Lake. The others live in this vincinity: Theodore Gehling, William
Gehling, Mrs. Clarence (Catherine) Masching and Mrs. Houlihan (Cecelia).
Out-of-town relatives present included: Mrs. Margaret Timp, Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Moeller and Mr. and Mrs. William Whlenhake, Ossian; Mr.
and Mrs. William Timp, Calmar; Mr. and Mrs. Anton Elsbernd, Fort
Atkinson; Bill Hageman, Cunningham, Kan.; Leo Hagaman and Fred Hageman,
Spivey, Kan.; Ralph Hageman, Cleveland, Kan.; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
Gehling, Dexter, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. George Gehling and family, Grand
Meadow, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Marcellus Wernimont, Laurens; Ann Wernimont,
Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wendl and family, Fonda; Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Gehling, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gehling, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gehling and
daughter, Lois, and Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Gehling, Gilmore City.
There were many other relatives and friends from the surrounding area.
Mr. Gehling was preceded in death by his wife, three children,
one brother and three sisters.
Surviving with his children are 59 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren
and one brother, Henry Gehling, Thief River Falls, Minn.
