Hiram Gentle

  Hiram Gentle passed from this life at his home east of Corning Tuesday morning, February 4, 1913, at 9:30 o'clock. Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. G. Marshall, pastor of the Congregational church, and interment will be made in Walnut Grove cemetery. Mr. Gentle was born in Franklin Center, Canada, August 31, 1838. He was married May 2, 1867, at Rome, Iowa, to Miss Sarah Tracey. To this union three children were born, Miss Minnie, at home; Albert, of. Corning, and Robert, residing at Livingstone, Mont. Mr. Gentle located in Adams county in 1869 and this has been his home ever since. Mr. Gentle located in this vicinity when Creston was the western, terminus of the C. B. & Q. railroad, and assisted in the work-of extending the system west. He was 'bridge foreman for the company for 21 years, holding that position when the Creston division comprised only that portion of the road from Afton to Villisca. He also worked for some time between Creston and Red Oak. He united with the Congregational church when a child and was ever an active worker in the organization, attending its services until failing health prevented. He was a charter member of the Corning Congregational church, he and his wife being the last remaining members of the charter list. Mr. Gentle served the church as a deacon for many years, as his ancestors had done for several generations. Mr. Gentle made, many friends and was a good neighbor, and a good citizen, enjoying the respect of all who knew him and his loss will be felt by many. Mr. and Mrs. William Gentle and Miss Ada also Mrs. Nina Wright, all of Creston, are here to attend the funeral. Other relatives are expected.

  The death of Hiram Gentle occurred Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at his residence following an illness of several years of stomach trouble. He had been confined to his bed for a couple of months and his death had been looked for by the family for the past three weeks. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence conducted by his pastor, Rev. Chas. Marshall of the Congregational church. Interment was made in Walnut Grove cemetery. Hiram Gentle was born August 31st, 1833, in Franklin Center, Quebec, Canada. At the age of 21 he came to Illinois where he remained until 1867 when he came to Iowa, settling at Rome. He was married to Miss Sarah Tracy, May 2, 1867, residing there two years. Three children were born to them, Albert Gentle, and Miss Minnie Gentle of this city and Robert Gentle residing at Livingston, Mont. The family removed to Corning in 1869 and Mr. Gentle secured employment on the "Q" road as bridge foreman in which capacity he served for twenty-one years. He was bridge foreman on the Creston division when the division comprised only that portion of the system from Afton to Villisca. At that date Creston was the western terminal of the C. B. & Q., and Mr. Gentle assisted in extending the system west. He was an all around, practical railroad man and enjoyed an enviable record and acquaintance among his workmen. He resigned his work on the railroad in 1890. He was a charter member of the Congregational church and has served continuously in the capacity of deacon since its organization. Mr. Gentle was one of the best types of honorable citizens in the country and was universally admired for his many noble qualities and admirable traits of character. He leaves many friends in this part of the state who will sincerely regret his demise.
