Mrs. Hiram Gentle
Died
Mrs. Hiram Gentle passed from this life at her home just east
of Corning Friday evening, June 25, 1915, at 10 o'clock, aged 72 years,
9 months and 4 days. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon
from the residence, conducted by Rev. J. J. Bayne, pastor of the
Congregational church. Interment was made in Walnut Grove cemetery,
where the body was laid beside the husband who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Gentle's maiden name was Sarah L. Tracey. She was born in
Belmont county, Ohio, September 20, 1843. She was married in Rome, Ohio,
May 2, 1862, to Hiram Gentle. The couple came to Corning in 1869, and
resided here continuously until the time of their deaths. Mr. and Mrs.
Gentle were among the few who organized the Congregational church in
Corning, and she was the last of the charter members to pass into the
great beyond, after years of loyalty to the church and sacrifice for its
interests in the early days of its history. Mrs. Gentle had a very wide
circle of friends, having lived here for so many years, and she was fond
of entertaining company. The portals of her hospitable home were always
open, and her cheering disposition has been an inspiration to many in
the struggle of life. Mr. Gentle passed away in February, 1913. The
mother leaves three grown children, Albert H. and Miss Minnie, of
Corning, and Robert, of Douglas, Wyo., to mourn her loss, along with the
many friends and associates. Although Mrs. Gentle had been ill for a
long time, her passing was peaceful and happy. Her unfaltering faith in
God and the future was a beautiful ending of a life of service in the
Master's vineyard, and it was a joy to her to know that her children
were members of the church she loved worthy successors of their parents.
They were all present at the funeral, one of the largest ever held in Corning.
Friends and relatives from a distance who attended the funeral
were Robert Gentle, a son, from Douglas, Wyo.; Mrs. Welch and Miss
Grace, also Mrs. Nina Wright, of Creston; Mrs. Charles Seaton, Salt Lake
City, Wm. Gentle, wife and daughter, Ada, and Marion Tracy, from
Creston; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barnes, Red Oak; Mrs. Henry Barnes, Elliott;
Mr. and Mrs. Levi Tracy, Bedford; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Peterson and Mr.
and Mrs. Walter Kempton, Villisca, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Means, Nodaway.
