In Memory of Mr. Dennis Haley

The following tribute to the memory of Mr. Dennis Haley, who died at Corning, Oct. 4, 1899, by his daughter, Maggie Cameron, will be read with interest by the many friends of the deceased:

On the 4th of October
In the early morn at six,
The light of a life went out,
To shine upon earth no more.
No tear that coursed a mother's cheek,
No breast that heaved a sigh,
Could save him from the silent tomb,
All felt that he must die.

The short and lonely days of illness
Were borne without a moan.
He knew that across death's river
He would dwell in Heavens home;
He knew that though his lifeless form
Would moulder in the grave,
His soul would rise to Heaven;
For a Christ had died to save.

No word or act did ever cause
Those cheeks to blush with shame
No gossip's tongue did ever speak
One word against his name.
His words of truth and honesty
Shall live for many a year
While down the cheek of loved ones
Shall roll many a sorrowful tear

I who write this poem
Was there to see him die.
And from my heart in earnest grief
I said to him "good-bye."
In the hope that we shall meet
Some day of a brighter dawn.
O, may you then be near us
To lead us to our eternal home.
