Obituary
Another pioneer Adams county citizen was called to his final
reward this week when Thomas S. Hatton, residing six miles south of
corning, passed away at 5:15 Thursday afternoon, August 20th. Mr. Hatton
had been in very poor health for a number of months with complications
incident to advanced age.
Thomas Hatton was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, June 13, 1855,
and at the time of his death was aged 78 years, two months and seven
days. Mr. Hatton came to Adams county with his parents in 1856 when he
was a boy of one year and resided with his parents on the old Hatton
homestead nine miles northeast of Corning until he moved to his farm
south of Corning in 1881. He was married on February 20, 1884, to Sarah
J. Barry, at Reno, Iowa, and to this union twelve children were born.
His wife and four children preceded him in death, the four children
passing away in infancy and Mrs. Hatton dying December 10, 1918. The
surviving children are Gladys, Francis and Lewis, at home, Mrs. Charles
L. Ans… of Massena, Mrs. Willard Burk of Santa Barbara, California,
Thomas K. Hatton, of Pocahontas, Iowa, James E. Hatton, of Corning and
William L. Hatton. He is also survived by three brothers, William R.,
Robert F. and James D., all of Corning, and also by eleven grandchildren
and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Catholic church in
Corning last Saturday morning, August 22, high mass at the funeral being
celebrated by Rev. Fr. M. J. Powers, pastor of the church. Interment was
made in Calvary cemetery. Pall bearers for Mr. Hatton were three sons,
James, Francis and Lewis, and three nephews, Joe Hatton, George and
Francis Miller.
Relatives from a distance who were here in attendance at the
funeral were Joe and Patrick Morris, of Patterson, Iowa, Mrs. John
Swift, daughter, Mary and son, Cyril, of Orient, Ia.
