James Leo Howard
James Leo Howard, son of William Joseph and Martha Hodges
Howard, was born July 22, 1889 in Schaller, Iowa, and passed away July
13, 1964 at Buena Vista county hospital, Storm Lake, lacking only nine
days of reaching his 75th birthday.
Jim Howard was united in marriage to Anne Lorenzen December 20,
1911 at her home in Schaller. She preceded him in death on September 14,
1963. They both had many illnesses and they ministered to each other
during these trying times and her passing left him grieving without
further purpose in life. He carried on bravely in spite of his
tremendous affliction with Parkinson's disease. He was tenderly cared
for in his home by Miss Eva Winterboer of Spencer, a practical nurse.
He lived his entire life in Schaller except for the period of
time when attending Commercial college in Des Moines and when he served
in the United States Army in World War I. He was a graduate of the class
of 1904 from Schaller public school. He was in partnership with his
father in the implement business until he left for armed service.
Following the war, he actively managed his father's and his own
extensive land holdings and assisted many others in farm management. He
had retired from active work when illness prevented him from having
sufficient strength.
Jim Howard joined the First Presbyterian church in Schaller
January 30, 1901 and supported the work of the church. He received his
50 year membership certificate from Acme Lodge No. 457 AF and AM in
April, 1962. He was a Thirty-second degree member of Scottish Rite
Bodies, a former member of the Shrine of Sioux City and a past member of
the Shrine Band. Mr. Howard actively participated in the Schaller
American Legion as long as his health permitted. He was a former officer
and director of State Bank of Schaller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; his parents, one
brother who died in infancy and one sister, May Howard Skinner.
He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and a host of
wonderful friends.
Mr. Howard received great satisfaction in quietly sharing the
material things in life wherever and whenever he found the need and his
helping hand will be greatly missed by individuals and organizations who
have known his generosity.
Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian church of
Schaller, Saturday, July 18, at 2 p.m. with Rev. G. G. Nusbaum officiating.
Mrs. Oren Rininger sang appropriate hymns accompanied by Mrs.
Charles Hogue. Mrs. R. R. Fifield and Mrs. John Watson were in charge of
the floral gifts.
Attendants were Lee Witte, D. J. Bennett, John Currie, Roland
Chapman, Harold Pyle and Harold Jensen. Burial was in the Schaller
cemetery with Legion Graveside services by Younie Bros. Post No. 134.
