Jerry Jennings, Aged 8, Coasting Accident Victim
Passed Away In Omaha Hospital Thursday
Jerry Jennings, eight-year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. M. T.
Jennings, who was injured in a coasting accident at the intersection of
Tenth and Adams streets Monday evening, January 13, passed away at an
Omaha hospital the following Thursday morning, without having regained
consciousness. Jerry, with two playmates, was coasting on the hill east
of the county jail and crashed into a car owned by Ralph Roland and
driven by Francis Clinton, who is employed by Mr. Roland. The accident
was unavoidable and no blame is placed on the driver of the car.
Following the accident, Jerry was given first aid at the Art
Marlatt home, near the scene of the accident and was later taken to his
home. Tuesday morning he was taken to the hospital in Omaha where he was
attended by specialists until Thursday when hope was give up for his
recovery. Jerry's injuries were confined to the head. Numerous X-ray
pictures were taken and a fracture in the back of the skull was noted
but specialists stated the fracture was not sufficient to cause death. A
severe blow on the front part of the head, near the right temple is
believed by physicians to have been the injury that caused the little lad's death.
Jerry Jennings, son of Dr. and Mrs. M. T. Jennings, was born June
22, 1927 in Corning, Iowa, and died January 16, 1936, in a hospital in
Omaha following a coasting accident. He was 8 years, 6 months and 24
days old at the time of his death.
Jerry was a member of the 3rd grade in the Corning schools and
was much loved by his teacher, Miss Ethel Narigon and pupils, who still
find it hard to believe that little Jerry, with his sunny smile is gone.
He was a child whose happy disposition impressed all who knew him, even
in the most casual way, and his death has left an aching void in the
lives of his family and friends, and in the entire community.
He is survived by his sorrowing parents, a sister Betty Lee, aged
14; two brothers, Wayne 12 and Jackie 6, and a host of friends who loved
him in life and will cherish his memory.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the St. Patrick
Catholic Church, the Rev. Father M. J. Powers officiating. Burial was
made in Calvary cemetery. Those from a distance who attended the funeral
were: Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Mann, St. Joseph, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. R. N.
Tichner, St. Joseph; Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Coulter, Council Bluffs; Joe
Devereaux and Mr. O'Connor of Omaha.
