Mrs. Earl Johns
Alcie Mae Patterson Johns, daughter of William and Anna
Emerson Patterson, was born December 11, 1908 in Newcomerstown Ohio and
died December 16, in the Greater Community Hospital of Creston, Iowa, at
the age of 68 years and 5 days.
She grew to womanhood and received her education in the
Newcomerstown public schools where she also played on two state
championship basketball teams.
On April 16, 1927, she was united in marriage to Earl H. Johns in
Wheeling, West Virginia. One son and one daughter were born to bless
their union. With Earl involved in the milk processing business, the
young couple lived in several different Ohio communities before moving
to California for a year and a half and then to Corning, Iowa, where
they made their home since 1938.
Alcie had numerous skills and interests among which was an
exceptional artistic ability, especially in painting and string art.
Perhaps her greatest satisfaction, however, was the pleasure she found
in the company and activities of her grandchildren. She also deeply
enjoyed playing bridge and fishing. While she and Earl were always an
unusually close couple, who did many things together, his retirement in
1963 made it possible for them to enjoy numerous other activities among
which was their annual trip south for the winter months where they made
many new friends.
Alcie was a member of the Snowbirds Bridge Club, the Corning
United Methodist Church, Royal Neighbors of America and the Korning Knitting Klub.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a 14 year old
brother and two sisters-in-law.
Surviving to mourn her passing are her husband. Earl; son Earl
Jr. and wife Betty of Council Bluffs, Iowa; daughter, Pat. Mrs. Bob Mack
and husband of Corning; 3 grandsons, Robert and Richard Johns and
Anthony Mack; one granddaughter, Anne Mack; a brother. William Patterson
and wife of Newcomerstown, Ohio; 2 brothers-in-law, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in
Corning December 18 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev, James W. King officiating.
Cremation followed the service.
Music was provided by Kathleen Cook, organist, and Donna Peckham
and Ruth Tranbarger, vocalists. Pallbearers were Harry Grundman, Leonard
Morris, Kenneth Roland, Paul Lashley, Bob Wheeler and Jack Butler.
