Richard P. Kane, son of Mary and John Kane, was born September 4,
1865, in Dubuque county, Iowa. In 1872, the Kane family located in Adams
county, on a farm south of Mercer Center, now occupied by J. W. Kane,
and the subject of this sketch grew to manhood there and attended school
in that township. He was married to Miss Mamie Kelly April 30, 1902. Mr.
Kane is survived by his wife and three children, Edith, Raymond and
Edward Kane; one sister, Miss Nellie Kane, of Corning, and two brothers,
J. W. Kane of Mercer township, and Allan Kane, of San Francisco, Cal.
His parents preceded him in death, his mother passing away July 4, 1887,
and his father on the 18th of March, 1920. Two brothers also preceded
him in death, one in infancy and Edward, who died in April, 1909; also
two sisters died in infancy. Mr. Kane and his family resided in Mercer
township until about four years ago when they retired from farm life.
Mr. Kane sustained a fractured hip in an accident some time ago and he
was never very strong afterward. He also suffered from a cancerous
growth on his neck. Mr. Kane, familiarly called "Rick," was
known and respected by a large circle of friends. He was one of the best
citizens of the community, with a pleasing personality and strong
character which made him many friends. He will be missed by many people,
who extend sympathy to the loved ones in their loss.
Mrs. Mary Kane, an aunt, and Mark Kane, a cousin, from Dubuque;
John Kelly, of Chicago, and John Quinn, of Maryville, Mo., were among
the relative from a distance who attended the funeral.
