Robert Charles Kane
The community was saddened by the death of Robert C. Kane
which occurred Sunday, September 2nd, at 11:30 p. m. at the home of his
son, Robert Kane, jr., in Mercer township. Mr. Kane had been sick for
about two years, his illness following a fall two years ago when he
suffered a fractured hip. He has not been able to walk since that time.
He was 86 years, 8 months and 3 days old at the time of his death.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at St. Patrick's
Catholic church with Rev. Father Powers in charge and interment was made
in Calvary cemetery.
Robert Charles Kane was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May
20, 1842. He was married to Mary Ann Daley in Dubuque county July 1,
1873 and in 1876 they came to Adams county and located on a farm near
Mercer Center. There they lived until Mr. Kane retired and moved to
Corning. Mrs. Kane died December 18, 1920, and Mr. Kane continued to
live here in town until six months ago when he was taken to the home of
his son, Robert, where he died.
There are six children who survive, they being Mrs. Bertha Keever
and Mrs. Alice Keever, both of Dakota; Robert Kane, jr., of Mercer
township, Mrs. Tim Ryan of near Corning, Allen Kane of Corning, and
Sister Margaret Mary of Sioux City. Thomas Kane, his only living brother
who lives at Dubuque and three nephews, Mark, Allen and Alfonso, were
here from Dubuque to attend the funeral. Raymond Sullivan, a nephew, who
was here for his mother's funeral, coming from Riviera, Texas, remained
over for his uncle's funeral. Mrs. Alice Keever was not able to reach
Corning until after the funeral Wednesday.
The passing of this fine pioneer of the county will bring sorrow
to a large group of people who have known him through the years and the
sympathy of the entire community is extended to the sorrowing family.
