Catherine Kennedy
A large circle of friends and acquaintances were grieved to
learn of the death of Mrs. Dan Kennedy, which occurred Sunday night at
11:45 after an illness which covered a period of one week. Mrs. Kennedy
took sick Sunday, March 17, with a slight intestinal trouble which grew
gradually worse until she passed away Sunday night. All of her eleven
children were summoned and were at her bedside when she died. Funeral
services were conducted at St. Patrick's Catholic church Wednesday at 10
a. m. at which time Father Powers sang the Requiem High Mass. Father
Pouget of Lenox acted as Master of Ceremonies and Father J. A. O'Neill
of Albia preached the funeral sermon and acted as Deacon of the Mass.
Father Leary, who is a guest of Father Powers, served as Sub-Deacon.
Interment was made in Calvary cemetery.
Catherine Kennedy was born in S. Carolina, May 8, 1848, and died
Sunday, March 24, 1929, being at the time of her death 80 years, 10
months, and 6 days old. She was married to Dan Kennedy, February 18,
1868, at Cascade, Iowa. They came to Mercer township in 1874 where they
resided four years and then purchased a farm in Jasper township where
they lived until they came to Corning thirteen years ago.
Mrs. Kennedy's husband and eleven children survive her. The
children are Miss Kate of Davenport, Iowa; Mrs. Will Ryan of Corning;
Mrs. Will Sullivan of Dunlap, Iowa; Sister Mary Helena of Davenport,
Iowa; Will of Creston; Dan, jr., Mike, John, James, Margaret and Nellie
of Corning and vicinity.
Mrs. Kennedy was one of our most worthy pioneer women. She was
quietly devoted to her home and her family and lived for their comfort
and interest, and received her happiest reward in the devotion they
showered upon her. Her devotion to her family and her loyalty to her
church and her simple goodness of heart were most beautifully set forth
in the talk of Father O'Neill at the funeral service. It was a fitting
tribute to a life well and nobly lived and was a source of great comfort
to the sorrowing family.
Those from out of town who attended the services, besides the
children mentioned were John Kennedy and son of Marcus, Iowa; J. W.
Kennedy of Streator, Ill.; Mrs. Frank McCabe of Dubuque, Iowa; Eugene
Kennedy of Merle, Iowa; P. L DeVaney, Cascade; Julia Kennedy of Chicago;
Ethel and Nellie Ryan of Omaha; Mary Sullivan of Omaha; Catherine
Sullivan of Council Bluffs; ant the children of Mr. and Mrs. W. J.
Sullivan of Dunlap, Iowa; and Sister Mary Rita of Ottumwa.

Married 61 Years Ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Kennedy wed February 18, 1868
It is rarely the good fortune of a couple to live to enjoy the
sixty-first anniversary of their wedding, but Mr. and Mrs. Dan Kennedy,
of Corning were lucky in passing their anniversary Monday, February 18,
1929. They are highly respected citizens of this place and have the best
wishes of their many friends, who join in congratulating them on
spending so many happy years of wedded bliss. They celebrated their
sixtieth anniversary last year in an elaborate manner, but this year the
day was spent in a quiet way.
Mr. Kennedy was born in Trilee, County Carey, Ireland, April 22,
1845, and came to America in 1963. He spent nearly three years in
Glenwood, New Jersey, then in 1865 came west and for a time his home was
in Dubuque county, Iowa. Mrs. Kennedy was formerly Miss Cathern Kennedy.
She was born May 3, 1847, in Charleston, South Carolina. The wedding of
Dan Kennedy and Miss Cathern Kennedy was solemnized by Rev. Father Lynch
in Cascade, Iowa, February 18, 1868. The home of the happy couple was in
Dubuque county for a time. They came to Adams County in 1874 and located
on a farm in Mercer township, three and a half miles south of Corning,
where they spent several years, and about 11 years ago moved to Corning.
To Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy eleven children were born. They are Miss
Katie Kennedy, of Davenport; Mrs. William Ryan, Corning; Miss Nellie
Kennedy, at home; Dan Kennedy, on the home farm; Mrs. W. J. Sullivan, of
Dunlap, Iowa; William Kennedy, in Creston; Sister Mary Helena, of
Davenport; John, James and Mike Kennedy, on farms near Corning, and Miss
Margaret at home.
Surrounded by their children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren, also numerous friends, Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy are spending
a happy life. It is hoped they will be here for many years to come.
