Dan Kennedy
The community was saddened Sunday night by the death of Dan
Kennedy, who has lived in this vicinity for fifty-six years, and during
that time has accumulated a large following of sincere friends who feel
that the death of this good man in the community is a distinct loss.
Mr. Kennedy has not been well during the summer, but was not
taken seriously ill until about three weeks ago, when he was compelled
to go to bed from sheer weakness. He suffered very little and his case
seemed to be simply that of the human machinery wearing out. The end
came quietly and peacefully Sunday night about eight o'clock with his
eleven children at his bedside. He had expressed himself as ready to go
and death had no terrors for this good man who had finished his life's
work. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Catholic
church, conducted by Rev. Father Powers, and interment was made in Calvary cemetery.
Dan Kennedy was born in Kerry county, Ireland, April 23, 1845,
and died August 31, 1930, at his home in Corning at the age of 85 years,
3 months and 8 days. He came to this country in early youth and was
married to Miss Catherine Kennedy in Cascade, Iowa, Feb. 18, 1868. In
1874 they came to Mercer township, and four years later purchased the
farm in Jasper township, on which they resided until 15 years ago, when
they moved to Corning. Eleven children survive this worthy couple and
the first break in the family circle came when Mrs. Kennedy passed away
about a year ago. Friends here have rejoiced with this family when they
celebrated their golden or fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1918, and
again when the sixtieth milestone of married life was passed in 1928,
the life of this fine father and mother has been a worthy example of
stability, honesty and integrity and as such both Mr. Kennedy and his
wife, who precede him a few short months ago, will be remembered.
The children who survive are Miss Kate Kennedy of Davenport; Mrs.
Will Ryan of Corning; Mrs. Will Sullivan of Dunlap, Iowa; Sister Mary
Helena of Davenport; Will Kennedy of Creston; and Dan, Jr., Mike, John,
James, Margaret and Nellie of Corning.
