Pauline Smith Kness.
Pauline Grace, daughter of Arthur W. and Minnie Smith was born
in Viola, Ill., August 10, 1905, and departed this life Monday, June 22,
1931 at 11:30 p. m., after being stricken with the extreme heat in the afternoon.
She received her education in the Viola school, graduating with the
class of 1923. She also attended Teachers' College at Macomb, and taught
school one and one-half years.
She was married to John M. Kness August 26, 1925, and resided
just north of Viola. Four children were born to this union, John Ralph,
aged 5, Imogene Grace, aged 3, George Arthur, who passed away in
infancy, Oct, 6, 1929, and Joan Marjorie, nearly 6 months, who are left
without a mother's care. She also leaves her husband, her father and
mother, brother, Louis W. Smith of Rock Island, and sisters Mrs. Bertha
L. Shaw of Griffin, and Mrs. Gertrude K. Adams of Matherville, Ill., her
aged grandmother and two aunts and uncles, also numerous other relatives
She was of a quiet disposition, making many friends which was
shown by the many beautiful flowers, and the unusually large number of
friends which gathered at St. John's Church of which she was a member,
to pay their last respects, on Thursday, June 25, at 9:30 a. m. Requiem
Mass was held by Father Farley of Alexis, assisted by Father Shields.
Burial was in the Viola Cemetery.
The casket bearers were six brothers in law, Vincent, Leo, Louis,
Matthew, and Martin Kness, and Fred Lindquist.
Among relatives from a distance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Lindquist of Sherrard, Ed McCardle and Charles Kness of Matherville,
Mrs. Eunice Short of Columbia, Mo., and son Homer Short, wife and three
children of Cameron, Ill., Mrs. Henry Smith and daughters, Mrs. Vivian
McKown of Keithsburg, Mrs. George Morey of Aledo, George Brandle, Sadie
Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Welch, and Mrs. Zenas Smith of Rock Island,
Mr. and Mrs. Cleland Alvin of Moline, Ill.
