Military Rites Are Held For Frank E. Mack
World War I Veteran Succumbs in Aledo
Funeral obsequies for Frank Edward Mack, 61, of Viola, were
held at 8:30 a.m. in the Crummy funeral home and at 9 a.m. in St. John's
Roman Catholic church on Tuesday May 10, 1960.
Graveside rites were conducted by the Matherville Aerie,
Fraternal Order of Eagles, and military rites by the Irvin Lee Terry
Post, American Legion, in cooperation with the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post of Mercer county. Mr. Mack died Saturday afternoon in Mercer county
hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Preemption
Mr. Mack was born in Preemption township, March 17, 1899, son of
John and Mildred Kehoe Mack.
Before and after World War I, Mr. Mack was an outstanding athlete
in the area. He was a football player with the Aledo Independents and at
St. Ambrose College. Mr. Mack also was an outstanding track star at the
college. He played basketball with the Reynolds Independents and was a
well-known baseball catcher with the Gilchrist, Matherville and Shuler teams.
He married Margaret Engstrom in Matherville, Sept. 10, 1924. She
survives as do two sons, Frank J. Mack of Rock Island and Raymond D.
Mack of Moline; four grandchildren; a brother, Louis J. Mack of Rock
Island, and a sister, Mrs. Grace M. Ohala of Highland Park, Ill. His
parents and a grandson preceded him in death.
