James P. Mack Called By Death

Was Leading Citizen of Preemption--Well Known And Well Liked--Passing Universally Mourned.

The community suffered a severe shock and loss in the death of James P. Mack who died in his home in Preemption township, Illinois, about 10 p.m. Saturday January 17, 1931, following an illness of one week, from pneumonia. Until the very last moment it was hoped and prayed that having lead a fine life, Mr. Mack would have sufficient vitality to come to his rescue so that he might be spared for many useful years to come, but although the tenderest and most efficient care that his loved ones, the attending physicians and all those caring for him could administer, he passed peacefully away, consoled and fortified by the last rites of his Church.
Mr. Mack was born April 29, 1878, in Preemption township, where he lived all his life. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Mack. He received his education in his home school and in St. Ambrose college in Davenport, Iowa.
Mr. Mack was a member and trustee of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He was one of the leading men in his own parish and in the whole community. He took a great interest in all charitable and civic movements and gave freely of his time and efforts for all causes which seemed to him to be worth while.
Having the responsibility of looking after the needy in his township, even during his sickness, the past week, he instructed one of his dear ones to do those kind and necessary acts for which he was responsible.
Being a man of sterling character, his judgment and sincere confidence was appreciated by all who knew him and he was called upon by many for advice and help.
He was the supervisor of Preemption township, the vice president and director of the Farmer's State Bank of Preemption, and also held other offices of trust in his parish and community.
Mr. Mack is survived by his sister, Miss Elizabeth, who lived with him at home, and brothers: John W. Mack of Corning, Iowa; Thomas F. Mack, Viola, Ill.; William P. Mack of Taylor Ridge, Ill.; Joseph C. Mack and Edward A. Mack of Lewistown, Mont., and Michael H. Mack of Preemption, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Daniel, who died recently.
Pallbearers were nephews, Vincent Mack and Byron Mack of Corning, Iowa; Joseph Mack of Taylor Ridge, Ill.; Leo Mack and Bert Mack of Preemption, and Walter Mack of Viola.
Funeral Services were held at St. Joseph's church at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and internment in St. Joseph's cemetery. Rev. J. T. Shields officiated.
