Joseph Mack, Founding Investor of Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp.
Joseph W. Mack, age 87, passed away on February 26, 2007 surrounded by
his loving family at his home in Poway, California. He was born on April
5, 1919 in Preemption, Illinois, the son of Michael and Mary Ethel Wheelan Mack.
Mr. Mack married Ann Nagosky Mack in 1950 in Rock Island, Illinois
and was a devoted husband to Ann and wonderful father to their five children.
Mr. Mack, an accomplished businessman, joined his son Michael in 1984
as a founding investor of San Diego-based Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp.,
parent company of Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes restaurants. He was
actively involved in the company and served on the Board of Directors
until it went public in 1995. His financial investment and leadership
built a strong foundation for the fresh and wholesome soup and salad
concept which has grown to 100 restaurants nationwide.
Prior to his role at Garden Fresh, Mr. Mack held several senior
marketing positions for multiple consumer housewares companies. In 1965,
he founded Mack Marketing, Inc., a successful marketing company that
consulted nationwide companies and stores for over 20 years.
Mr. Mack was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army serving
from 1941 to 1946 and a graduate of St. Ambrose College in Davenport,
Iowa. A passionate golfer, Mr. Mack was a member of the Country Club of
Rancho Bernardo where he pursued his love of the sport. He was best
known for brightening the day of everyone he came in contact with.
Mr. Mack is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Ann; his five
children Joseph, Elizabeth, Susan, Joan and Michael and their families;
and his brothers Francis and James and his sister Mary Elizabeth Young.
Funeral services for Mr. Mack will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday,
March 1st, at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Pomerado Road in Poway, California.
