Rites Held Tuesday For Martin Mack
Aledo's oldest resident, Martin Mack, died Saturday evening,
April 20, in Mercer County Hospital, Aledo, at the age of 110.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in the
Reiser Funeral Chapel, Aledo, with the Rev. Claude Moreland, pastor of
the First Baptist Church of Aledo, officiating. Burial was in the Aledo Cemetery.
Mr. Mack was born Oct. 30, 1863 in Rollo, Ill., a son of Angus
and Lucretia Callahan Mack.
He came to Aledo about 40 years ago and his last job, before he
retired at the age of 90, was sweeping the streets of Aledo. He was
employed by the street department for 15 years.
On Oct. 22, 1925, Mr. Mack married Mary Caroline Schwartz in
Aledo. She died Dec. 5, 1972.
He was orphaned at the age of two and was employed on a farm at
the age of seven. He went on to many types of employment including work
on railroads in Illinois, working in logging camps in Canada, as a
crewman on steamers going to Mexico and Cuba and setting dynamite for
construction crews.
After his retirement from the street department he raised a large
garden each summer, and sold vegetables, and was a familiar sight
peddling his bicycle to and from the business district.
He moved to the Georgetown Manor Nursing Home several years ago
and spent much of his time reading, for the most part without glasses,
through his 109th year.
Last October, to note his 110th birthdate, the city of Aledo
proclaimed Oct. 30 as Martin Mack Day and a reception was held at the
Nursing Home. Many relatives and friends called that day to wish him
well and his memory remained keen as he recalled events of past years
while visiting with his guests.
He was of Baptist faith and was a member of the Aledo Men's Club.
Surviving are three daughters Mrs. John Moore of Milan, Mrs.
Kenneth Kellogg of Goshen, Ind., and Mrs. Mary Bethell of Arizona; 18
grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter.
