'Neal' McCann, Creston
Cornelius E. "Neal" McCann, 90 a lifelong resident
of Union County, died early Sunday morning at Creston Manor Nursing Home.
He had been a resident there for the past several years. Sunday
was the 65th anniversary of his marriage to Mary Catherine Sullivan,
daughter of Steven and Helen (Coen) Sullivan of Afton. Mrs. McCann died in 1970.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. McCann is scheduled for 10
a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Worship Center at the Holy
Spirit Church here. The Rev. Fr. Arthur McCann will officiate. Burial
will be in Calvary Cemetery here. Services scheduled for Mr. McCann
Tuesday at the Coen Funeral Home here include: a 3 p.m. rosary, a 7:30
p.m. prayer and an 8 p.m. rosary by the Knights of Columbus. A memorial
in Mr. McCann's name will go to the Holy Spirit Parish.
Mr. McCann was born May 2, 1890, in Union County to John and Mary
(Hayes) McCann.
Mr. McCann attended rural schools in Lincoln and Spaulding Townships and
attended Creston Business College. He farmed 3½ miles east of Creston
from 1910 until his retirement in 1948. He and his wife then moved to Creston.
Mr. McCann was a member of the General Sheridan Council of the
Knights of Columbus for 72 years and served as Grand Knight of the
Council for one year in the 1930s. He was a longtime active member of
the Elks Lodge, a former member of the Lions Club and a member of
numerous other farm and civic groups. Mr. McCann was a member of the
Holy Spirit Catholic church.
His survivors include: his son, C. Joseph McCann of Gladwyne,
Pa., and eight grandchildren, Stephen E. and Thomas McCann of Creston,
Dr. James P. McCann of Chester, Mont., Maureen (McCann) Waldron of
Omaha, Neb., Mary Margaret McCann of St. Louis, Mo., Eileen J. McCann of
Gladwyne, Pa., Joseph Neal McCann and Kathleen (McCann) Thompson, both
of Portland, Ore.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eugene S. of Creston, who died
Oct. 1; his parents; five brothers, James J., Steven, Edward, Thomas
and Peter L., and six sisters, Nellie (Mrs. Albert) Leninger, Mary (Mrs.
John) Wallace, Elizabeth (Mrs. Edward) Geis, Ethel (Mrs. George) Carr,
Julia (Sister Mary Genevieve) and Josephine.
