Francis McManus
Francis L. McManus, 66, of Sherrard, died Tuesday, Jan. 27,
2004, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock
Island. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island, where graveside
military services will be conducted by Mercer County VFW Post 1571.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fippinger Funeral Home,
Aledo, where a rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Memorials may be left to
the American Cancer Society or Gilda's Club.
He was born Dec. 10, 1937, in Rock Island, a son of Lawrence F.
"Mickey" and Henrietta "Pet" Hancq McManus. He graduated from
Sherrard High School in 1955, and later studied at the University of Illinois.
Francis served in the Army from 1961 to 1963 where he was stationed in
Europe working as a radio operator and was a decorated sharp shooter.
He married Fran Daufeldt Dec. 4, 1971, at St. Mathias Catholic
Church, Muscatine.
He farmed the family farm in Sherrard all of his life. He was a
pioneer to no till farming in this area.
Francis was a member of the Rivola Gun Club in New Windsor and enjoyed
hunting and muzzle loading firearms. He participated in Civil War
reenactment with the U.S. 9th Illinois Calvary.
Survivors include a daughter, Julie McManus, Coyne Center; son
and daughter-in-law, Brian and Dana McManus, Sherrard; two
stepgrandchildren; his mother, Henrietta McManus, Aledo; and sisters,
Betty Lou Young, Viola and Mary Anita Zwicker, Bradford. He was preceded
in death by his father.
