Lawrence McManus
Lawrence F. "Mickey" McManus, 87, of rural Aledo
died Thursday, February 8, 1996 at the Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.
Services were 10 a.m., Monday at St. Anthonys Catholic Church in
Matherville with the Rev. B.K. Tran officiating.
Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery Rock Island.
Memorials may be made to St. Anthonys Catholic Church Matherville
or to the Mercer County Hospital Aledo.
He was born March 12, 1908, in Preemption Township, son of Frank L. and
Hermina Steinhauer McManus. He attended the local schools in Reynolds
and Aledo and graduated from Aledo High School in 1927.
He married Henrietta M. "Pet" Hancq February 15, 1936,
in Rock Island. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage next week.
He was a lifetime member and trustee for 50 years at the St.
Anthonys Catholic Church in Matherville. He was a lifetime Livestock and
Grain Farmer and was a pioneer in breeding hybred hogs in Mercer County.
He helped establish the Mercer County Soil Conservation District and
practiced the use of Soil Conservation extensively on his farm and was
named Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation Farmer of the year in
1963. He won the Illinois DeKalb Corn growing contest in 1942.
In 1962, along with 29 other Illinois Farmers, he was a member of
one of the first People to People tours to Russia and other countries
behind the Iron Curtain. He had been active in the Mercer County Farm
Bureau serving as a Board Member, Vice President and President. He was a
member of the Mercer Service Company serving as a Board member and
President. He was a member of the Illinois Agricultural Association
serving on its committees. He was a member of the University of Illinois
Citizens Committee, St. Anthonys Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus,
Aledo Improvement and Development Committee, Alpha Enterprises, Mercer
County Historical Society and AARP.
He is survived by his wife, a son, Francis L. McManus of rural
Sherrard, daughters and son-in-laws, Betty Lou and Donald Young of rural
Viola and Mary Anita and Steven Zwicker of Princeton, 10 grandchildren,
8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Vira Barnes two brothers
Marcus and Leroy McManus.
Pallbearers were Charles Sloan, Dale Hamerlinck, Joe Fritch, Joe
Young, Brian McManus and Robert Carroll.
Honorary pallbearers were Paul Young, Buddy Barnes, John Lovett,
Wilber Hopkins, Le Roy McManus, Michael McManus and Patrick McManus.
