Mary M'Manus, 72, Preemption, Dies Mrs.
John C. McManus, 72, who resided two-and-a-half miles southwest of
Preemption, died at 5:15 o'clock this morning in St. Anthony's hospital,
Rock Island. Death was due to complications from arthritis. She had been
confined to her bed 15 years. She entered the hospital Dec. 19.
Mrs. McManus, the former Miss Mary C. Conway, was born May 1,
1871, in Preemption township and was reared and educated there. She was
married to Mr. McManus Feb. 1, 1905 in St. Joseph's Catholic church,
Preemption. Since the time of their marriage they had resided on the
same farm near Preemption.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, who died in
August, 1940. Mrs. McManus was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church, Preemption.
Surviving are the widower; a son, Charles, both of Preemption,
and a sister, Miss Etta Conway, Aledo.
The body will be taken to the farm home at 5 o'clock tomorrow
afternoon from the Wheelan funeral home, Rock Island. Funeral services
will be at 9:30 o'clock Monday morning from the farm residence and at 10
o'clock in St. Joseph's Catholic church, Preemption. Burial will be in
St. Joseph's cemetery. (December 31, 1943) Death Takes
Mrs. Conway Hold Services for Preemption Resident from St.
Joseph's Catholic Church Mary Kathryn Conway McManus of Preemption
was born May 1, 1871 at Preemption and died Dec. 30, 1943, at St.
Anthony's hospital, Rock Island.
She married John McManus Feb. 1, 1905, at St. John's Catholic
Church near Preemption. She lived near Preemption all her life.
Mary Kate, as she was known to her friends, was bedfast 15 years
of arthritis, but was cheerful and loved by the many who knew her.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church and St. Joseph's
Alta society.
Survivors
She leave to mourn, her husband, a son Charles, a sister Etta
Conway of Aledo; four grandchildren, Patrick, Martin, Rita Mae and Gary
Leo of Preemption. A son, Leo, preceded her in death in August, 1940.
Funeral services were conducted at St. Joseph's church by Rev.
John T. Shields and Rev. Joseph Odea in the sanctuary. She was laid to
rest in St. Joseph's cemetery.
Mrs. Marie Dacey, James, Kathleen and Mary Ellen Conway sang with
Mrs. Charles Conway at the organ.
Pallbearers were Mike Mack, Charles Conway, Bert Horan, Bernie
Brennan, Mike Odea and Martin Horan.
