Stroke Fatal To Mr. John Meehan Last Wednesday
Was Stricken at Knights of Columbus Meeting Tuesday Evening, December 3,
Died Following Evening Funeral Services On Friday
Services Held at St. Rose of Lima Church Largely Attended - Interment in
Catholic Cemetery
John M. Meehan, who on Tuesday evening of last week suffered a
stroke while in attendance at a meeting of the Knights of Columbus in
the Catholic auditorium, died Wednesday night, December 4, about 9
o'clock after suffering a second stroke. Mr. Meehan had apparently been
enjoying the best of health and his sickness and death came as a great
shock, not only to the members of his family, but his large circle of
friends as well.
John M. Meehan was born Aug. 31, 1877, at Milan, Ill., and when
three years of age accompanied his parents to Crawford county, first
settling on a farm south of Vail, where they resided for a few years,
and later moving to a farm west of Denison and it was there that he grew
to manhood. He received his education in the rural schools, assisting
his father in the summer months with the farm work. In 1904 he accepted
a position as fireman on the Milwaukee railroad out of Sioux City, but
resigned a few years later to accept a position with the Hanford
Creamery company and much of his time was spent in traveling in the
South Dakota territory. In 1912 he accepted a position as salesman for
the Pennsylvania Consumers Oil company of Council Bluffs and worked
continuously for that firm with the exception of two years during the
world war, when he was United States deputy marshal residing at Davenport.
In the year 1917 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Malloy
and to this union were born three children, Mary Catherine, Elizabeth
Ann and Margaret Reta.
Mr. Meehan was a devout member of the Catholic church and was an
active member of the Knights of Columbus and held important offices in
that organization. He also was a member of the United Commercial
Travelers association. During his several years of residence in Denison
he took a prominent part in the affairs of the church and the Knights of
Columbus, appearing in most of the entertainments given and gained
considerable of a reputation for himself as an entertainer of ability.
He was invited on a number of occasions to put on sketches from nearby
radio stations. Mr. Meehan was a good citizen and one who made a host of
friends for himself and his happy and jovial disposition. He was a
devoted husband and a kind and loving father.
Besides his wife and children he is survived by three sisters,
Mrs. M. W. Conway, of Aledo, Ill; Mrs. J. A. Houlihan and Mrs. E. L.
Champion, of Denison, and one brother, Dr. J. J. Meehan, of Denison.
Funeral services were held Friday morning at 9:30 o'clock from
the St. Rose of Lima church. Father Casey officiating, after which
interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.
The out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral
services were P. C. Hart, T. J. O'Brien, M. J. Malloy, J. M. Malloy and
Mrs. J. J. McCann of Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Conway, Mrs. Joseph
Meehan, Miss Virginia and Joseph Conway of Aledo, Ill; Mrs. Nellie
Frazer, Carl Frazer, Mrs. George Huffman and Mrs. C. D. Barnes of Omaha;
M. Talty of Neola; Tom Talty of Atlantic; George Talty and Mr. and Mrs.
Leo Hickey of Adair; Wm. and Joseph Garvey of Des Moines; Mrs. T. M.
Behan of Chicago; John P. Tinley, John Tinley Jr., Albert McGinn, C. W.
Beem, Leonard Clinton, Walter Thorson all of Council Bluffs; and three
representatives of the Consumers Oil Co, namely; President H. C. Meir,
Secretary R. E. Pleree and sales manager H. H. Hand.
